WWE Superstars Series Nine.png

WWE Superstars are the spiritual successor to the cancelled Masters Of The WWE Universe line, with a bit of the WWE Retro line thrown in for good measure.

The bodies are definitely in the MOTWU mold, with very basic body types and less of the nuanced physiques that, say, the main line of WWE Mattel figures has (some could even compare them to the old AWA figures, in fact). But unlike their He-Man counterparts, these figures have outfits and accessories that are more wrestler-friendly and true to their original characters.

Let's look at the ninth series, which was released exclusively in Wal-Mart stores.

Unlike some of the recent WWE Superstars sets, this collections seems incredibly... random. I'm not entirely sure what type of theme they were going for here.

The British Bulldog (no relation to yours truly) is dressed in his SummerSlam 1992 gear, where he captured the Intercontinental Title from brother-in-law Bret Hart in a classic. This includes braided, cornrow hair, and the Union Jack plastered all over his trunks.  He also has a matching Union Jack cape that I dare you not to pose him with... it's that good!

Speaking of great outerwear, Mattel created a great boxing robe for Muhammad Ali. And while I'm really, really, REALLY tired of WWE Muhammad Ali figures, this beautiful red robe gives it a pass from me. Plus you can switch out his hands and replace them with red boxing gloves.

Kane comes with no such outerwear, although I will give Mattel props for not going with the typical red and black outfit. This one is black and red... which may seem like the same thing, but they've inverted the color scheme so that he's posed in the lesser-seen "away" uniform he rocked sometimes in the early 2000s.

Is this my favorite WWE Superstars set? Definitely not, but they did give us three characters that we didn't have in the line before. That has to count for something.
