WWE Superstars are the spiritual successor to the cancelled Masters Of The WWE Universe line, with a bit of the WWE Retro line thrown in for good measure.
The bodies are definitely in the MOTWU mold, with very basic body types and less of the nuanced physiques that, say, the main line of WWE Mattel figures has (some could even compare them to the old AWA figures, in fact). But unlike their He-Man counterparts, these figures have outfits and accessories that are more wrestler-friendly and true to their original characters.
Let's look at the eighth series, which was released exclusively in Wal-Mart stores.
After Mattel squished together Series Four and Five and Series Six and Seven with some figures in each of both sets, they finally got their act together with Series Eight. Adding only three figures this time (plus a chase variant), the series is back to basics.
Kicking things off with Andre The Giant, which is actually two figures in one! First, it should be noted that The Eighth Wonder Of The World has such huge proportions that his feet don't even fit in the package! Instead, you have two sets of boots (black and blue) that can attach to the figure and make him giant-sized. You can choose to make him the WrestleMania III Andre with black singlet and short hair, or you can remove the singlet and add a curly-hair wig to make him the Andre of the 1970s and 1980s. Plus, like all Superstars figures, he comes with alternate hands.
Hulk Hogan comes in two color variants. The standard edition is red while the chase variant is blue. However, the real charm to this one is that it depicts The Hulkster in his pre-WWF days! We're talking a full head of hair, mushroom cloud-style chest hair, sunglasses, and a black cloth jumpsuit to make him look like a karate enthusiast from 1977.
This WWE Superstars line keeps improving, and I love that they're experimenting with different styles and eras here. Great set overall!
