WWE Retro figures are the spiritual successor to the WWF Hasbro figures of the 1990s. Small, chunky and packed with "action moves," Mattel introduced the line in 2018, creating a nostalgia fix for long-time collectors, while also creating something fun for newer figure collectors.
A menu of reviews for each series in the collection can be found at the bottom of this page. For now, let's take a closer look at what Mattel is calling the Retro Tag Team 2-Pack, sold exclusively through Ringside Collectibles.
The resurrected Retro lines that have been coming out since January 2022 have been phenomenal, and this particular nWo-themed pack may top them all. Even the box art for this one is a work of art, with all four packaged figures on the box with black-and-white nWo themed art. For those curious, inside the box are two separate packages, each with two figures and resealable card-backs.
The first package contains former WCW Tag Team Champions Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. Hall is a decent-enough rendering, and his first figure in the Hasbro/Retro format since his days as Razor Ramon. Hall comes with molded-on sunglasses (as they all do in this set) and a painted-on T-shirt (same with the others as well), with his black outfit accented by the patented Scott Hall red "blood drops."
Nash is a very good rendering of Big Sexy, with seemingly some re-used parts from Series 10's Diesel figure. The only real complaint with this one is that the red fringes on his pants are microscopic and not exactly faithful to Nash's look at the time.
The second two-pack contains Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Syxx. Mattel has released several Hollywood Hulk figures in recent years, so they do have the look down pat. Plus Hogan's limbs are likely repurposed from Braun Strowman/Diesel Retro parts, so proportionately, Hogan looks quite huge. His right leg has "kicking" action, which makes it slightly harder to pose on a shelf, but perfectly for doing his patented leg drop or big boot to opponents.
Syxx is a fun figure, complete with red bandana and a face-scan that features his tongue sticking out. In addition to the painted-on shirt and trunks, Syxx's back has the six billiards ball painted out, an homage to his nWo merch shirt. He's also a "jumper" figure, along the lines of Finn Balor, Sting, Triple H, Goldberg, Seth Rollins and other Retro figs.
Overall, this set is quite solid, with all of the nWo leaders well-represented. Pair these with your Randy Savage "Madness" and Sting "Wolfpac" Retro figures and you've got a decent subsection of the legendary faction represented.
